Last June, Turin hosted the 3rd Annual Assembly of ELEN, with the participation of representatives from the member firms: Bufete Conesa Asociados, D&RH Avocats, Studio Avvocato Carena, and Valdemar Gonçalves & Associados. José Saad of Saad Advocacia, a firm based in Brazil, also attended as a guest.
Outgoing president Jean Jacques Duflos formally handed over the presidency to Vincenzo Carena, the new ELEN president for 2011–2012, who welcomed attendees with an opening address at "Il Circolo" in Turin.
Once the assembly was under way, the first item on the agenda was the appointment of the new ELEN president for the 2012–2013 term, a role that went to lawyer Valdemar Gonçalves, whose firm is based in Porto.
Members then reviewed the working relationships developed over the past year between the various firms, followed by a discussion to finalise the professional exchange placements across the network.
Following a membership application submitted by guest firm Saad Advocacia, it was agreed that a vote would take place at the next assembly in Porto, at which point the potential membership of Wolfgang Wodok's Munich-based firm would also be considered. The assembly was informed of ongoing discussions regarding the possible admission of firms from Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Poland, and Switzerland.
Bufete Conesa Asociados presented the book "Ser Empresario en España" ("Setting Up in Business in Spain"), a practical guide for anyone looking to establish themselves in the country. The publication will be made available in Spanish, English, French, Italian, German, and Portuguese.
Following the assembly, guest speaker Wolfgang Wodok, a lawyer based in Munich, delivered a presentation on the various forms of employment contract available under German law. Lawyer Anna Gibello of Loyens Loeff Advocaten contributed a written paper on non-competition clauses and their treatment under Belgian law.
After the official proceedings, attendees and their companions enjoyed the planned social programme, which included a visit to the gardens of the Reggia di Venaria Reale in Turin, followed by the "La Bella Italia" art exhibition, which marks the 150th anniversary of Italian unification and showcases the culture, history, and art of various Italian cities from the pre-unification era through to the time of Garibaldi.
The next ELEN assembly will be held from 28 to 30 June 2012 in Porto, home city of the president for the 2012–2013 term.
