WHAT IS THIS ADDITIONAL PENSION SUPPLEMENT?

The Gender Gap Reduction Supplement is granted to mothers and fathers whose pension was awarded on or after 4 February 2021 and who have one or more children.It is a way of recognising parenthood and its future contribution to the Social Security system, and it increases all retirement, permanent disability and widowhood benefits by the following amounts depending on the number of children:

How much does the demographic supplement increase your pension?

The supplement amounts to €30.40 per month per child, up to a maximum of €121.60. This means you can claim from €354.80 per year per child up to €1,459.20 in total.

However, where a man claiming as the second parent (by virtue of the ruling we explain below) wishes to claim this demographic supplement, the previous rules apply and the following amounts may be claimed:

Two children: 5% increase
Three children: 10% increase
Four or more children: 15% increase

Can both the father and the mother claim the demographic supplement or increase to their disability or retirement pension at the same time?

The ruling of the Supreme Court 362/2023 of 17/05/2023 has recognised this right in favour of fathers, as well as mothers — that is, in favour of both parents, in recognition of the ruling of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) of 12 December 2021 (2019, 281), which had already determined that granting the demographic contribution supplement to retirement pensions exclusively to women was discriminatory towards men. In the Court's view, in order to achieve equal treatment between men and women in the field of Social Security, fathers and mothers are in a comparable situation.

Accordingly, on a retroactive basis, men who hold contributory pensions for:

retirement,
permanent disability,
widowhood

may apply for this demographic contribution supplement. This means that, in addition to the percentage going forward, it is also possible to claim the amounts that would have accrued since the benefit was introduced, from 4 February 2021 onwards, subject to a 5-year limit, as this constitutes a Social Security claim.
