"On Wednesday I was a bit nervous getting out of the hotel lift: I've only been with Aliant for a short time, I have little experience of international events and although I've been speaking English for years I feel slightly awkward with strong accents.... Nevertheless, I took the plunge and went into the lawyers' convention room. I had already collaborated online with three or four colleagues who seemed very professional, but I counted about 35 lawyers there and I knew that the next day another 15 would join us = a total of 25 nationalities from all over the world.
After the first greetings, a friendly dialogue gradually started to develop in the room, putting me at ease; I appreciated the non-verbal language which confirmed to me that there was a personal and friendly rapport amongst the group. We settled into our assigned seats, except for Jacob, our L.A. lawyer, who led the meeting in a pleasant, orderly and productive manner.
Then came the moment to introduce our firms, and in no time it was my turn, but I felt calm: when I talked about my team and what we do, I felt confident and proud. Easy peasy! I am confident in our abilities to help our clients legally. Test passed! That round came to an end and I realised that I was in the right place, at the right time, and with the right people because, moreover, I noticed that we have similar firms and in today's market you can only survive if you offer an excellent service.
I was going to spend two more days with this group and I was feeling much more encouraged. People came up to me naturally during our walks together in the beautiful city of Vilnius, which helped us to interact. And as if that weren't enough, we were treated to wonderful weather that made me feel at home.
The days went by and both our Lithuanian hostess' loving preparation of the agenda along the great organisation of an Aliant member were evident. On the various sightseeing tours and in local restaurants we alternated between speakers and activities that were well thought out and helped us to build international networks. We all spoke the same language and had a good time rotating amongst each other; One moment I was teaming up with colleagues from Cyprus, Shanghai and Austria... the next I was talking to colleagues from Switzerland, Costa Rica and Hungary :-) I had a great time and was constantly learning! The end approached, but our online meetings will never be the same because we have built up so much trust... and that's what our clients are asking us for! I can only conclude that these people really are very legal.
I suppose it happens to everyone, but every good experience gives me a bittersweet feeling; the happiness of what I have experienced and the sadness of saying goodbye. Each farewell seemed to me like embracing a whole country, and as I flew back on the plane I felt grateful and in good company on my journey. It felt as if the whole world had welcomed me."
